In 2015, Helen and Nate bought the land that Hattie had lived on. (This was the opening chapter, so not a spoiler.) She was right – three kids died and the townspeople hanged Hattie for it. In 1924, she warned people not to send their children to school because it was going to be burned down. In the early 20th century, Hattie was seen as a “witch” because she saw things before they happened. I’m rating it “ok”, but I feel like if my mind had been paying better attention at the moment it picked up, I “should” be rating it good. It’s kind of one of those things where it’s tempting to go back knowing what you know “now”, at the end of the book, to see how you had been led astray in your thinking. ![]() At first, the twist at the end confused me a bit, but it was explained. Con: It’s a sweet little story, but there’s really only one character, Meigan, no actual conflict, and no real tension. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Little Free Library” is a real organization. Based on what we’ve learned of Meigan to this point, she’ll be a great caretaker for the egg. And the little gold coin (with a bird on it) is a nice touch. “I believed that I would never have the opportunity to avenge what was done to my family” is both funny and scary at the same time. The way it escalates when she passes on a copy of Defending Your Castle is priceless. ![]() ![]() Subtle hints, like the neighbor having never heard of the Lord of the Rings, then more serious ones like the leaf that’s unlike any from any known tree. Review: 2020.212 ( A Word for Authors) Pro: The best part of this story is Meigan’s gradual realization that her correspondent is a not just an ordinary neighbor. ![]() ![]() “‘I believe that, with color, I can capture a more enduring truth, he said. I've always loved Nick Nolte and am sad that he has become so obese, but his innate attractiveness made me forget how misshapen he is. ![]() I am also resistant to feel-good movies but this was definitely in that genre. I am not a laugh-out-loud person generally and I didn't read the book, so I don't know whether Bryson is responsible. There are many, many lines that made me laugh out loud. I loved it because I'm not a hiker, and I truly felt every bit of resistance that Nolte's character expresses to being out in nature while on foot. Okay, this movie isn't great art, but it's delightful, funny, filled with veteran actors (Nick Nolte, Robert Redford, Mary Steenburgen, and Emma Thompson who, as usual, is absolutely perfect for the part she plays. ![]() ![]() ![]() He begins saving his feces and the leftovers from his meals to use as “compost,” then he mixes the compost with Martian soil and Earth soil, converting it all to crop soil.
